Matters of the Mind: Psychology of Language Learning

Following the success of this conference and its followup (PLL2), the way was paved for the creation of the International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning. You can read more details about the conference (link no longer active, sorry!) in the website of the Association.


Psychology of Language Learning
Graz, 29-31 May 2014

The international conference “Matters of the Mind: Psychology of Language Learning” will explore the interface between psychology and language learning and teaching. Some of the topics that will be covered include autonomy, beliefs, emotions, goal setting, group dynamics, motivation, the self, strategies, metacognition, willingness to communicate, individual differences, among others.

The conference

The conference will begin at 9:00 on Thursday 29th May 2014 and end at 13:00 on Saturday 31st May 2014. Plenary speakers include:

  • Andrew Cohen, University of Minnesota, USA
  • Zoltán Dörnyei, University of Nottingham, UK
  • Jean-Marc Dewaele, University of London, UK
  • Paula Kalaja, University of Jyväskylä, Finland
  • Ema Ushioda, University of Warwick, UK

In addition to the plenary talks and presentations, there will also be a series of expert-led workshops & symposia on the topics of anxiety, critical thinking skills, learner autonomy, imagination, styles, positive psychology, and the self. The social programme (update: link no longer active) includes a welcome event on Wednesday 28th May and an optional excursion to the Styrian wine region.

Call for papers

Proposals are invited for 30-minute talks and poster presentations on any of the conference topics. Interested applicants are requested to submit a 200-word abstract for review by the panel, and a 50-word abstract for the conference programme. Abstracts are to be submitted through the online proposal form (link no longer active) by 31st October 2013. Notification of acceptance will be given by 31st January 2014.
