After School: lessons learnt

This project, which I was responsible for co-ordinating, aimed to evaluate the after-school programmes which were being piloted at the Second Model Experimental Primary School of Ioannina (B’ Πρότυπο Πειραματικό Δημοτικό Σχολείο Ιωαννίνων).

Using a case-study approach, the project synthesised data pertaining to the expectations of participating students, teachers and stakeholders, and compared those against existing pedagogical provision and the regulatory framework. Quantitative and qualitative data was generated using a variety of methods, including questionnaire surveys, observations, focus group discussions and the content analysis of documentary evidence, with a view to evaluating the effectiveness of the current provision and making recommendations for further iterations of the programmes.

There were three research strands in the project: Strand A delivered a holistic appraisal of the after-school programmes; Strand B took an in-depth look at the excellence-oriented programmes, and Strand C focussed on the provision for Foreign Language Learning. The project provided relevant and actionable feedback to the school, in the form of a internal report. In addition, findings of relevance to educators outside the school were disseminated in the form of two conference presentations (below), and an article is under preparation for submission to an appropriate peer-reviewed journal.
