The 11th Annual Conference of the BAAL Language Learning and Teaching SIG will be hosted by the Edinburgh TESOL and Applied Language Research Group (ETAL), Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh, and is set to take place on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd July 2015.
The theme of the upcoming conference is The Languages of Language Learning. The conference aims to explore questions that arise from the proliferation of research perspectives, such as:
- How do we make effective use of L1 resources in learning or teaching an L2?
- How do we decide whose vocabulary / grammar / pragmatics / pronunciation we should be learning or teaching?
- How do we effectively adapt class content for learners in different age groups?
- How do we align situated and local second language needs with the demands of national and international standardized tests?
The conference organisers are keen to provide “an opportunity for fruitful and engaging discussion focusing on ‘the what’ and ‘the how’ of second language teaching in an age of increasing globalization.”

Call for papers
Presentation proposals (20 minutes followed by 10-minute discussion) are invited from researchers and practitioners working in TESOL and Modern Foreign Languages. Poster proposals are also welcome. Some possible themes include:
- Corpus Linguistics and Learner Corpus Analysis
- Lingua Franca Perspectives
- The Role of the L1 in L2 Teaching
- Conversation Analysis
- Interlanguage Pragmatics
- Cognitive-Functional Orientations
- Formulaic Language
- Multilingualism
- Translanguaging
- Task-Based Language Teaching
Prospective presenters are requested to send a proposal containing a title and an abstract (250 words max.) to lltsig2015(@)ed.ac(dot)uk by 9th March 2015.
Conference fees
The conference fees, which include attendance, lunches and refreshments are as follows:
- Non-BAAL members £180.00
- BAAL members £155.00
- Student/unwaged £130.00
An optional conference dinner will be held on the boat The Maid of the Forth, with a 3-hour cruise on the Firth of Forth. This will include a live jazz band and a BBQ (vegetarian options are available).
